Fat Transfer procedure

An amount of fat is harvested from a suitable donor site under local anesthesia. The fat is then treated, refined and re-injected into the treatment area.

The procedure involves a level of pain and discomfort and usually takes about 45 minutes.

Several small injection sites are made on the tissue to allow the implantation process to proceed. These areas will heal within a few days and rarely leave any marks.

Indeed, it is common to encounter substantial swelling during the first 24 to 48 hours following the procedure. However, it’s important to note that this swelling can endure for up to six weeks, with micro-swelling persisting for as long as six months. Additionally, bruising and redness may be noticeable for several weeks after surgery. Nonetheless, it’s crucial to recognise that the recovery experience can differ from person to person, and numerous contributing factors can impact the recovery journey.

As infection is possible an antibiotic course will be given prior to and after the procedure.

Cosmetic surgery medical requirements

From 1 July 2023, new regulations around cosmetic surgery were implemented by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA) and the Medical Board of Australia. Please make sure you have read and understood these new reforms when considering your cosmetic surgery

Fat Transfer expected results

Occasionally, uneven filling and lumpiness can arise after a treatment, but these issues can typically be rectified with subsequent procedures.

In some cases, the process may need to be repeated 2 to 3 times due to factors like fat metabolism and unforeseen circumstances. While multiple areas can be addressed during a single session, it’s important to avoid over-correcting any specific area in one sitting, which is why several sessions may be necessary for certain patients.

The fat that is injected tends to be long-lasting in these areas, but as the natural aging process continues, there may be a gradual reduction in contours. Therefore, additional procedures may be needed in later years.

Facial filling can contribute to a more rejuvenated appearance and is an excellent treatment option, especially when combined with other procedures.

Risks and Recovery of Fat Transfer

Fat transfer surgery, also known as fat grafting or fat injection, involves harvesting fat from one area of the body (often the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks) and injecting it into another area to add volume or enhance contours. Alike any surgical procedure, it carries certain risks and requires a period of recovery. Here are some of the potential risks and the typical recovery process associated with fat transfer surgery:

Risks:

  1. Infection: Any surgical procedure carries a risk of infection. However, we will be providing you with antibiotic scripts that you must fill prior to surgery and our registered nurses will detail when you should start taking them.
  2. Bruising and Swelling: Bruising and swelling are common after fat transfer surgery, particularly in both the donor and recipient areas. This usually resolves within a few weeks but can persist longer in some cases.
  3. Fat Resorption: Not all of the transferred fat cells will survive in their new location. Some degree of fat resorption is normal and expected, but excessive resorption can lead to a loss of volume in the treated area and a top-up maybe required at a later stage.
  4. Asymmetry: Achieving perfect symmetry is an unrealistic expectation, and there’s a risk of asymmetry between the treated areas.
  5. Necrosis: In rare cases, inadequate blood supply to the transferred fat can lead to tissue necrosis (death of tissue cells). This can result in delayed wound healing and potential scarring.
  6. Calcification: Sometimes, calcification can occur within the transferred fat, leading to firmness or lumps in the treated area. Massage and other techniques may be recommended to address this issue and we will discuss this further with you, if this is the case.
  7. Prolonged Recovery: Some patients may experience a longer recovery period than anticipated, particularly if complications arise or if they engage in strenuous activities too soon after surgery.

Recovery:

  1. Initial Healing: After fat transfer surgery, you’ll need to rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first few days. No extreme heat or cold should be applied to the fat transfer areas and if transferred to the face, minimal facial movement should be used.
  2. Follow-Up Visits: Ensure to attend all follow up appointments whether they be in person or via facetime. This will allow us to monitor your progress and ensure proper healing.
  3. Resuming Activities: While you’ll need to avoid vigorous exercise and heavy lifting for several weeks, you can typically return to light activities within a week or two. Our clinical team will discuss this with you further in your follow-up appointments.
  4. Long-Term Results: It’s essential to have realistic expectations about the final results of fat transfer surgery. It may take several months for swelling to fully resolve and for the transferred fat to settle into its new location.

By understanding the potential risks and following your post-operative instructions diligently, you can help minimize complications and achieve results from fat transfer surgery.

FAT TRANSFER SURGERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION

In accordance with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) protocol, it is a prerequisite to obtain a GP referral for all cosmetic surgical procedures before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Glenn Murray. Additionally, a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire will need to be completed to assess your suitability for the procedure. To facilitate informed discussions and address any questions you may have, informational videos will be sent to your designated email prior to your meeting with Dr. Murray. Following a second consultation with a member of our clinical team, a mandatory 7-day cooling off period will commence. During this time, we strongly encourage you to seek further information and education regarding your desired procedure, as well as consider obtaining a second opinion. After the 7-day cooling off period, you are welcome to proceed with scheduling your procedure and embark on your Absolute Cosmetic journey.

It is imperative to strictly avoid smoking, vaping, and illicit drug use before, during, and after the procedure. Nicotine consumption during the surgical process heightens the risk of complications, infection, delayed healing, or an unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome. Please note that we maintain a stringent cancellation policy for those who continue to smoke or vape. We advise all patients to cease smoking at least 2 weeks before the procedure and to abstain for 6 weeks following the procedure. Reducing nicotine intake does not diminish the risk of complications; the most substantial health benefit is derived from quitting smoking altogether. We highly recommend and encourage the use of nicotine cessation aids during this period. For more comprehensive information regarding potential complications and guidance on quitting smoking, please refer to this resource.

It is vital to note that if you have smoked within the last 2 weeks, the procedure will be canceled, and payment will not be refunded.

To ensure your readiness for the procedure, being in good health is essential. It’s crucial to avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, fish oil, green tea, and turmeric leading up to the procedure. Additionally, a blood test should be conducted at least 1 week before the scheduled procedure. A nurse will go through an extensive checklist to ensure that you are well prepared, via a pre-operative call before your procedure day.

On the day of the procedure, fasting is mandatory, meaning you should refrain from consuming food or water for 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgical start time. However, you may take a small sip of water in the morning to consume any pre-surgery medication if necessary. These precautions are taken to optimize your safety and the success of the procedure. All paperwork must be completed before the procedure and will be sighted and signed by your admitting surgical nurse.
